For this project, Funktion Design reimagined U-Solar’s cafeteria as a calming oasis within the city—an environment that invites pause, warmth, and connection.
At the heart of the design was a striking ceiling installation: a floating canopy composed of ten expansive frames, each ranging between 10 to 20 feet in length. The concept brought together scale and lightness, creating a sense of movement and openness overhead.
Once the design direction was set, the process moved into making—where material and craftsmanship took centre stage. The entire installation was built using bamboo, chosen for its strength, flexibility, and natural character. Both the structural frames and woven mats were carefully handcrafted, with every curve, joint, and surface shaped by skilled artisans.
This was a process rooted in precision and patience. Each element demanded attention to detail, from structural integrity to the tactile quality of the finish.
While the final installation appears effortless, it carries within it hours of labour, thoughtful execution, and the quiet expertise of many hands. This project is as much about the journey of making as it is about the space it transforms.
